Will Make Your Virgin Island So Stay More Enjoyable January 8, 2010 Gracie Houston (Santa Cruz, California) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I've been to the Caribbean more times than you can shake a stick at, because I have family in St. Lucia. I've been to most of the islands from St. Thomas in the North all the way down to Grenada in the South. I have experienced the Caribbean and I plan to go on experiencing it for many years to come. It's a wonderful place to take your vacation.
The Virgin Islands are right up at the top of my list as gorgeous places to visit. The people are friendly, they speak English (after a fashion) and they like to party. They play late in Charlotte Amalie and Christiansted. And even if you just want to relax the day away, you can do that to in both the USVI and the BVI.
Fodor's U.S. & British Virgin Islands will show you what's what's and where it is. It'll help you plan your trip and it'll even give you ferry routes and times between the islands. There are separate sections on St. Thomas, St. Croix, St. John, Tortola and Virgin Gorda (my favorite island). There are all the maps you'll need here and good recommendations on where to stay. In short, if you're going to the American or British Virgin Islands, this book will make your stay so much more enjoyable.
Lovely format January 19, 2010 TheProf (Somewhere in AL, USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I love visiting the Virgin Islands and was pleased to be able to find this book available. I think they did a great job in describing and using visual images to guide the reader around the islands. Having been to the islands in the past, I would recommend this book to anyone. It is accurate and very helpful with maps and comprehensive summaries.
Very good travel guide... January 20, 2010 Judy Smith (jamestown, ky United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you buy this before you go to the U.S. & British Virgin Islands, you will be prepared for everything. The author goes there so much herself that she has thought of everything interesting to put in it. For instance if you want to go there to get married, can you get your license ahead of time? You can, but you have to go there and pick them up in person. The best time and the cheapest rates are in the off season which is still a really nice time to go. She even goes into where smoking is allowed, the best and the off beat restaurants and ferry service and times, places to see, things to do, etc. She also gives the names and addresses of rental agencies in case you want to rent a villa or condo.
A great book and full of information!
Great travel guide and companion while on vacation December 27, 2009 Scott (NJ) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a fantastic detailed travel companion and guide for the U.S & British Virgin Islands. The guide covers way more then I thought. It has maps, beaches, where to eat, hotels, shopping, nightlife, outdoor activities, do's and don'ts, sight seeing attractions. The book is full color which is nice and helps with the maps. It goes into full detail on each subject for each island. I've been to St. Thomas before and did see alot of the things I did and saw listed in the book. I also did notice that there were a few listings that tend to be the main or most popular things which can be more expensive or more crowded, although they are those things the places are safe and have plenty of people so the chances of problems or crime are less for tourists (at least that was how I felt when there).
There is a yearly temperature guide so you know before booking your trip what the average temps will be like. The guide also lets you know with a scale how expensive the local restaurants listed will be and what kind of atmosphere they are. The same is for just about everything in the guide like shore excursions, beaches, attractions, tele numbers and web sites are listed too on most. Because its the Caribbean there are a lot of water activity listings for each island and of course beaches and the listings for the most popular and even some of the secluded areas.
If your planning to or have already booked your trip to one of the islands listed in this book (St. Thomas, John, Croix, Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, Jost Van Dyke) This is a great guide to get and bring along on the trip.
The Virgin Islands, in color... December 31, 2009 D. S. Thurlow (Alaska) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
"U.S. & British Virgin Islands 22nd edition" is Fodor's 2010 guide to one of the most popular tourist destination in the Caribbean. Fodor's has made the jump to full color guides; this edition features a lavish and inviting selection of pictures, along with some excellent maps.
The guide is organized in the familiar Fodors manner. It opens with a general introduction, then proceeds to cover the major islands. St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix in the US Virgins each rate their own section. In the British Virgin Islands, Tortola and Virgin Gorda also rate individual attention. There is a catchall section for the smaller, but still worthwhile, islands in the British Virgins. Each sectional entry provides an introduction, and makes suggestions on where to visit, eat, stay, and shop. The entries reflect the long experience in the islands of the writters.
Both the US and British Virgin Islands are famous for their recreational opportunities, which include fishing, diving and snorkeling, sailing, and just hanging out at various lovely beaches. The national parks on St. John and Virgin Gorda offer some hiking opportunities. The history of the islands go back to the days of Christopher Columbus; there are museums and surviving historical houses and forts to visit. For example, Whim Plantation on St. Croix is a restored sugar plantation with an intact great house, windmills, and other buildings.
The Virgin Islands tend to be an expensive destination, and the cost seems to increase the further one ranges from St. Thomas, location of the principal airport and the primary port of call for cruise ships. The increasing cost is compensated for by the lush beauty and lighter crowds of the more remote islands, some of which feature specialized resorts. With this guide, and some further research using the advertised websites, the savy traveler may be able to find some good bargains, especially in the shoulder seasons.
"Fodor's US & British Virgin Islands Full Color Gold Guide" is very highly recommended as a useful planning tool and touristing guide to the lucky traveler planning a visit to the Virgin Islands.
